Look for the sticker
Most laptops have a small Intel or AMD sticker on the palm rest, beside the touchpad.
In Windows
Open Settings, then System, then About. The line headed Processor starts with Intel or AMD. Our spec guide has pictures of each screen.
If it won't turn on
Turn it over. The label underneath carries the model number (on HP, the "Product" or "P/N" line), and that's enough to look up everything else. Or ring us on 01440 784570 with the model number and we'll look it up.

Finding your HP’s model and processor
HP’s label is on the base (inside the battery bay on some older models). It names the product, EliteBook 840 G8 for example, and gives a Product number (P/N or Product No.) and a serial number (S/N). On a working HP, press Fn and Esc together for the HP System Information window, or open HP Support Assistant: both show the product name and serial number. Our spec guide covers finding the processor in Windows.
Reading HP model names
On an EliteBook, the middle digit of 830, 840 and 850 is the screen size: 13.3, 14 and 15.6 inches. The G number is the version, and each one moved to a newer Intel chip:
- EliteBook 840 G6: 8th-generation Intel
- 840 G7: 10th generation
- 840 G8: 11th generation
- 840 G9: 12th generation
- 840 G10: 13th generation
An 845 is the AMD version: the 845 G8 has a Ryzen 5000. ProBooks use the same size digit, so a ProBook 440 is 14-inch and a 450 is 15.6-inch. Pavilion, Envy and Spectre names don’t carry the generation, so check the processor.
What changes the price
- Its G number, through the generation: an 840 G8 is worth more to us than an 840 G6 in the same condition.
- An EliteBook 830 has a 13.3-inch screen, so it’s priced below the 840 of the same generation. We still buy it.
- Send the HP charger if you have it. Without a working one, an Excellent laptop stays Excellent and we take £10 off; Good and Faulty prices don’t change.
- Faulty HPs are bought too. Read selling a broken laptop before you choose a condition.

Is an EliteBook worth more than a Pavilion?
Not for the name. An EliteBook and a Pavilion with the same processor, generation, screen size and condition get the same price from us.
My EliteBook is a G5. Which generation is that?
HP sold the EliteBook 840 G5 with either a 7th or an 8th-generation Intel processor. The processor’s model number tells you which: i5-7200U is 7th, i5-8250U is 8th.
My HP won't switch on. Can you still price it?
