Look for the sticker
Most laptops have a small Intel or AMD sticker on the palm rest, beside the touchpad.
In Windows
Open Settings, then System, then About. The line headed Processor starts with Intel or AMD. Our spec guide has pictures of each screen.
If it won't turn on
Turn it over. The label underneath carries the model number (on HP, the "Product" or "P/N" line), and that's enough to look up everything else. Or ring us on 01440 784570 with the model number and we'll look it up.

Sony VAIO laptops we buy
We buy Sony VAIO laptops, but a Sony VAIO is worth next to nothing to us, and the reason is its age. Sony sold its VAIO business to Japan Industrial Partners on 1 July 2014, so the newest Sony-badged VAIO is more than ten years old.
Finding your VAIO’s model and processor
The model code is on the underside label, and it starts SV on the later models (SVP1321 is a VAIO Pro 13). If the VAIO still starts, follow our spec guide to read its processor in Windows.
Reading VAIO model names
VAIO names don’t show the generation, and you don’t need them to. The last VAIOs Sony made, such as the VAIO Pro 13, have 4th-generation Intel Core processors, and every Sony VAIO before them is older.
What changes the price
- Processor age. A Celeron, a Pentium or any of the first five generations of Intel Core is worth next to nothing to us, working or not, and every Sony VAIO falls in that group.
- Windows 11 needs an 8th-generation Intel Core or newer, so no Sony VAIO meets it, and Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025.

My VAIO was made after 2014. Is it a Sony?
No. VAIO laptops made after July 2014 come from VAIO Corporation, the company Japan Industrial Partners set up, and aren’t Sony machines. Ring 01440 784570 and we’ll look yours up.
Is it worth sending my VAIO at all?
Check our figure before you pack anything. With a 4th-generation processor or older, it’ll be small. If it isn’t worth sending, recycle it.
Where do I find the processor on a VAIO that won't start?
You don’t need to. The model code on the label is enough for us, and every Sony VAIO has a processor from the generations we pay next to nothing for.
