Look for the sticker
Most laptops have a small Intel or AMD sticker on the palm rest, beside the touchpad.
In Windows
Open Settings, then System, then About. The line headed Processor starts with Intel or AMD. Our spec guide has pictures of each screen.
If it won't turn on
Turn it over. The label underneath carries the model number (on HP, the "Product" or "P/N" line), and that's enough to look up everything else. Or ring us on 01440 784570 with the model number and we'll look it up.

Finding your Dell’s model and processor
Turn the laptop over. The model name and a seven-character Service Tag (marked ST or SVC Tag) are on a sticker or etched into the base. Type the Service Tag into Dell’s support site at dell.com/support and it brings up that exact laptop and its original configuration. SupportAssist, Dell’s own app, shows the tag on a working machine. The Windows route is in our spec guide.
Reading Dell model names
A Latitude’s four digits follow a pattern. The first is the range (3, 5 or 7), the second is the screen size in inches (3 for 13, 4 for 14, 5 for 15.6), and the third goes up by one with each yearly model:
- Latitude 5410: 14-inch, 10th-generation Intel
- Latitude 5420: 14-inch, 11th generation
- Latitude 5430: 14-inch, 12th generation
- Latitude 5440: 14-inch, 13th generation
- Latitude 7490: 14-inch, 8th generation
In XPS 13, 15 and 17, the number is the screen size, and the four-digit code after it runs the same way: an XPS 15 9500 is 10th generation, a 9510 is 11th and a 9520 is 12th.
What changes the price
- Generation first. A Latitude 5440 is worth more to us than a 5420 in the same condition.
- A 13 or 14-inch Dell, such as a Latitude 7320, a Latitude 5420 or an XPS 13, is still bought, for less than a 15.6-inch one.
- Send the Dell charger with it if you still have it. Without a working charger an Excellent Dell stays Excellent, less £10, and a Good or Faulty one is priced the same either way.
- No power, a cracked screen or a spilt drink puts a Dell in Faulty, and we still buy it, as selling a broken laptop sets out.

My Latitude says E7470. Is that too old?
No. The E7470 is a 14-inch Latitude with a 6th-generation Intel processor, from before Dell dropped the E from its names. We buy it, and it prices below the 11th-generation models in the table above.
Where's the Service Tag if the sticker has worn off?
Newer Dells have it etched into the base. If that’s unreadable too and the laptop starts, the BIOS setup screen shows it.
Does a Precision's workstation graphics card add to the price?
No. We only price the graphics card on gaming laptops. A Precision is priced like any other Dell, by its chip, its screen size and its condition.
