How much is my laptop worth?

Lenovo laptops we buy

We buy Lenovo ThinkPad, ThinkBook, IdeaPad and Yoga laptops. Lenovo Chromebooks aren’t on our form. Legion gaming laptops have a separate Lenovo Legion page.

Finding your Lenovo’s model and processor

Lenovo’s label on the underside shows the product name, the machine type and model (MTM, marked MTM or Type) and the serial number (S/N). The first four characters of the MTM are the machine type: 20W0 or 20W1 is a ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 with an Intel chip, and 20XK or 20XL is the AMD one. Lenovo Vantage shows both on a working laptop, and Lenovo’s support site (pcsupport.lenovo.com) lists the specification from the serial. Our spec guide has the Windows route.

Reading Lenovo model names

A ThinkPad’s Gen number is Lenovo’s version, and the Intel and AMD versions of one Gen carry different chips:

  • T14 Gen 1: 10th-generation Intel, or AMD Ryzen 4000
  • T14 Gen 2: 11th-generation Intel, or Ryzen 5000
  • T14 Gen 3: 12th-generation Intel, or Ryzen 6000
  • T14 Gen 4: 13th-generation Intel, or Ryzen 7000
  • X1 Carbon Gen 9, 10 and 11: 11th, 12th and 13th-generation Intel

Gen numbers don’t line up across ranges either: an E14 Gen 2 AMD has a Ryzen 4000, older than the T14 Gen 2 AMD’s. IdeaPad names end in a code that starts with the screen size, then I for Intel or A for AMD. An IdeaPad 5 14ITL05 is 14-inch with an 11th-generation Intel, a 14ALC05 is 14-inch with a Ryzen 5000, and an IdeaPad 3 15IAU7 is 15.6-inch with a 12th-generation Intel.

What changes the price

  • Which chip sits behind the Gen number, so check whether yours is Intel or AMD.
  • Lenovo chargers are USB-C on recent ThinkPads and the rectangular slim-tip plug on older ones. Without a working one, an Excellent laptop stays Excellent and we take £10 off; Good and Faulty prices don’t change.
  • A ThinkPad with a dead screen or liquid damage goes in as Faulty, and selling a broken laptop has the details.

Lenovo laptop questions

Payment, collection and data wiping are covered on our FAQs page.

Is the Lenovo IdeaPad worth less than a ThinkPad?

Not to us. We price on the chip and its generation, the screen size and the condition, so an IdeaPad and a ThinkPad that match on those get the same figure.

My ThinkPad is a T480. What generation is that?

Lenovo sold the T480 with a 7th or an 8th-generation Intel processor, so read the processor number: i5-7 is 7th, i5-8 is 8th.

Where's the MTM if the label has gone?

On a working ThinkPad, Lenovo Vantage shows it, and so does the BIOS setup screen.
